Yule Log / Buche de Noël

Joyeuse Noël, folks! Since I’ve only recently started working on my culinary skills, I’ve never contributed to family meals. So, this Christmas was my first attempt! I decided to do a classic yule log. I vaguely remember attempting one of these for french class back in middle or high school but I totally may not have. Anyways, I totally did it! I was surprised at how successful I was.

I followed this recipe for the log and the filling along with some of the extra detailed instructions provided in the steps of this recipe. I did the roll itself two days before Christmas and then frosted and decorated the outside day-of, using a half-recipe of this frosting.

The dusting with sugar was really fun. It had soaked in a bit by the time we made it to Grandma’s house but it was still delicious 🙂

And look at this swirl! This is a shot of the only slice that was left the next day and it’s fallen a bit but still! Hot damn! A lot of people messed up this part of the swiss roll technical challenge on GBBO so at least I’m doing something right. And not a bit of it cracked. Smooth and perfect. I really didn’t need the outer layer of frosting. It just makes it more log-y 🙂 I’m looking forward to trying a real swiss roll in the near future!
